New Vision Screenings Now Available at Our School-Based Health Clinics

Southeast’s school-based health clinics now offer quick and easy vision screenings using the Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener. This new tool helps identify possible vision concerns in children in just a few seconds during a well-child, sports physical, or preventative visit.

What is the Spot Vision Screener?

The Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener is a handheld, portable device that allows for fast, non-invasive vision screening. It is designed to detect vision issues early, even in very young children.

Why Vision Screening Matters

Many children may not realize they are having trouble seeing clearly. Vision problems can affect learning, development, and behavior, and often go unnoticed. Early screening helps catch these issues so they can be addressed quickly.

How the Screening Works

The process is quick and simple. The child looks into the device from about three feet away. The device uses lights and sounds to keep the child’s attention while capturing a reading. The results are available immediately and show whether your child’s vision is within a healthy range or if a full eye exam is recommended.

What the Device Screens For

The Spot Vision Screener can help detect common vision concerns, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, unequal vision between eyes (anisometropia), eye misalignment (strabismus), and unequal pupil size (anisocoria).

There is no discomfort, and the screening does not require eye drops or any special preparation.

What Happens After the Screening

If the screening shows that your child may need further care, we will contact you. You will receive a summary of the results and, if needed, a recommendation to schedule a full eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

This service is part of our commitment to providing high-quality care and supporting your child’s health and success in school.
