Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Southeast Community Health Systems

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at Southeast Community Health Systems, we are committed to raising awareness about the importance of breast cancer screenings for women in southeast Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, but with early detection, it is also one of the most treatable. In this blog post, we will explore some critical statistics related to breast cancer in our region and emphasize the benefits of regular screenings.

Breast Cancer Statistics in Southeast Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish:

Let's begin by looking at some sobering statistics regarding breast cancer in our area, drawing from data collected between 2015 and 2019:

Southeast Louisiana:

  • Incidence rate: 132.8 cases per 100,000 females
  • Mortality rate: 23.8 deaths per 100,000 females
  • Five-year survival rate: 90.8%
  • Screening rate: 69.5%

East Baton Rouge Parish:

  • Incidence rate: 132.8 cases per 100,000 females
  • Mortality rate: 24.2 deaths per 100,000 females
  • Five-year survival rate: 91.1%
  • Screening rate: 69.9%

These numbers reflect the significant impact of breast cancer on our community. However, it's essential to recognize that early detection can significantly change these outcomes.

The Power of Screenings:

Statistics clearly show that women who get regular breast cancer screenings benefit in several ways:

  • Reduced Mortality: Women who get regular mammograms are 40% less likely to die of breast cancer than those who do not undergo screenings.
  • Improved Prognosis: The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the prognosis. Early detection often means less aggressive treatment and a higher chance of survival.
  • Lowest Risk: Women who have mammograms and clinical breast exams every year, starting at age 40, have the lowest risk of dying from breast cancer.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage all women in southeast Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish to take action. Don't wait; talk to your doctor about getting regular breast cancer screenings. By doing so, you are taking a proactive step toward safeguarding your health and ensuring a brighter future for yourself and your loved ones.
